Basic Methods of Salt Production

Many people use salt daily to add taste to food, as saltiness is one of the fundamental human tastes. This mineral, commonly called rock salt, halite, common salt, or table salt, is composed of sodium chloride. Hub Salt is considered one of the largest producers in the salt industry in Pakistan as they have increased its salt exports from 400,000 tons a year to around 30 million.

While the ocean is a natural salt brine, hydraulic mining (or solution mining) of salt involves pumping water below the earth’s surface to dissolve salt deposits and create a salt brine. This brine is then pumped to the surface and evaporated to create salt. The salty brine may be treated prior to evaporation to reduce mineral content, yielding a nearly pure sodium chloride crystal. This method is inexpensive, has a high yield, and produces a very clean salt. Of the 220 million tons of salt, only 6 percent is used for human consumption. In solution mining, wells are erected over salt beds or domes (deposits of salt forced up out of the earth by tectonic pressure) and water is injected to dissolve the salt.

Prior to the 1950s, salt extraction in this area was small-scale and methods were rudimentary. In the 1950s, San Francisco ceased supplying salt to the US west coast paper industry and an alternative source of salt was needed. Exportadora de Sal (Salt largest producer of salt in the world Exporter) is now jointly owned by the Mexican government (51%) and the Japanese Mitsubishi corporation (49%). Today, the Khewra salt mines are the second largest in the world. The output over its lifetime is estimated to be 220 million tons.

The mining is done very carefully and the salt is hand mined from the salt mines of Khewra. Then it is packaged carefully and sent off to the manufacturing units where it gets refined and then re-packaged to be able for you to use and for export as well. The Bima Salt Pans on the island of Sumbawa play a huge art in one of Indonesia’s most important commodities. The salt pans of Bima Bay occupy nearly 7 square miles and have been producing salt for centuries. The salt from Bima has been traded throughout the Indonesian archipelago for centuries. It is also believed that Bima salt made it to Malaysia and the Phillippines along the travels of Bugis sea gypsies. Though today Bima salt is one of the islands most important commodities, the production is still largely a cottage industry.

How Salt Is Made

This huge production will bring an influx of salt export and it will contribute to making Pakistan the 2nd largest exporter of salt in the world. It sold 8.98 million tons of salt in 2014, 87.4% of the national total. 60% of the output of industrial salt (for use in pulp and paper, and chemical industries) is exported to Japan.

Gujarat is the largest salt producer state of India and third largest in the world. The state contributes 76 percent to the total salt production in India, Kharaghoda,Bhavnagar, Porbandar and Rann of Kutch of Gujarat are major salt produced districts. The US ranks second globally, producing an estimated 44,312,914 tons annually, which represents 14.54% of the world’s total salt supply. Interestingly, only seven states are responsible for producing 95% of national total. In these states, salt extraction involves underground mining or the use of solar or vacuum evaporation technology.

Giant gondola trucks collect the mounds of salt and carry it to a cleaning plant. The salt is then washed with a salt water solution to purify it still further, before being shipped.
